This rain gauge is designed to use the water being collected to magnify the already large numbers. As the water rises, the cylindrical shape of the vial acts as a magnifying lens, effectively increasing the width of the numbers covered by 50 per cent!
This rain gauge also uses a collection funnel with a surface area greater than that of the collection tube. This allows the scale to expand proportionately which in turn allows for larger, easier to read numbers.
